B.EI.ED (Bachelors in Elementary Education)

High School/Secondary School Teacher

Teachers in High school teach students from 6th to 10th standard. Teacher’s emphasis on instilling the right attitude and character building of the students as children in these standards are in their pre-teens and teens.  Teachers need to be compassionate, approachable and should be sensitive to handle the emotional disturbances of students during this crucial phase and help them to navigate it safely as there is high influence of peer and media on these children. 

A post-graduate degree (in any stream) and B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) degree is must to become a high school/secondary school teacher.  

Salary of High School/Secondary school teacher – Approximate salary ranges from 18,000/- to 25,000/- per month. It depends on the level of teaching, personal skills, pay policy of the school HR and the responsibilities embarked on by the teacher.

Senior Secondary school / Junior College (11th & 12th standard)

Senior Secondary schooling is of 2 years, a teacher here will be teaching students 11th and 12th standards also called Junior college in India.  The teachers are expected to teach particular subjects of specific streams such as science, commerce or arts. Junior college starts teaching specialized subjects which lay the foundation for the crucial years of higher education like degree/diploma/specialized programmes etc.  

Educational qualification of junior College’s Teachers’ is B.Ed (Bachelors of education) and master degree in any field with a minimum aggregate of 55 percent.  Aspiring teachers also can attend central/state-specific Teaching tests to get certified for central/state government school teaching jobs. These tests include CTET (Central teacher eligibility test) and STET (State teacher eligibility test) which can qualify them for teaching in junior Colleges. 

Salary of senior secondary School/Junior College teacher – Approximate salary ranges from 23,000/- to 28,000/- per month. It depends on the teaching skill, interpersonal skills, pay policy of the junior college and the responsibilities assigned to the teacher.

After a degree and a Post – graduate degree, the aspiring professor should opt for SLET (State eligibility test) or NET (National eligibility test) examinations to qualify for a PhD. It approximately takes 4-6 years to finish a PhD depending on the program design, study subject chosen and university. 

These are SLET is re-named as SET (state eligibility test). This test is held in the month of June. NET is held two times in a year in June and November. The USP of NET test is that those who have cleared NET test can work as assistant professor’s post in any educational institutes or colleges throughout India.

After completing the NET exam successfully, the applicants who opt for the M.Phil / PhD programme are awarded a JRF (junior research fellowship) of 2 years along with a per month stipend. After 2 years they are sponsored as senior research fellow depending on their performance their fellowship can be extended to 3 years too.   

The hierarchy of this teacher’s qualification is lecturer – assistant professor – associate professor – professor. 

To be a professor in college, a normal master degree is a must. Once the aspirant finishes his/her PhD, the job profile starts as an assistant professor, later as associate professor and later as professor; it mainly depends on research  work and knowledge of individuals.

Salary of Professor – Approximate salary ranges from 25,000/- to 38,000/- per month to the professor being highest rs. 75,000 – 1,00,000 p.m subject to level of teaching, the nature of the college/institute (aided or unaided) and the responsibilities undertaken.
